Know your customer
17 12 2007IT directors, CIOs, Tech Recruiters. . .all these are my target customers. So it was with great pleasure that I read this interesting post about The top 10 pains in the neck for IT Directors.
Also, this informative manifesto is very useful, although it does use the word algorithms, which is usually a nonstarter for me!
AS for time management, here is an excellent article about every salesperson (and recruiter’s) dream of that 13th month. This site is an excellent resource recommended by another recruiter from NY. Thanks Brett!

More cool Omaha facts
11 12 2007I swiped this neat blurb about Omaha from regarding Java architects on Monster.com
Omaha, with a regional population around 800,000, offers a variety of cosmopolitan attractions, yet is small enough to provide a relaxed life style, which is the envy of many urban dwellers. Omaha has top ranked school systems and exceptional academic, sports, and leadership growth for children. Omaha residents enjoy low crime rates; low cost of living, and short commute communities. The strength of the community is reflected in the numerous high rankings the area has been given by the national media.

* Eleventh best city for Business and Careers (Forbes)
* Among the Top 25 Cities for “Best Educated Workforce” (Business Facilities –2005)
* One of the top 10 cities for raising a family (Parenting Magazine)
* Omaha is in top 12% of best places to live (Places Rated Almanac)
* Papillion (Omaha suburb) ranked #6 of best places to live (Money Magazine – 2007)
Pretty neat huh? Also in recruiting news, some of the best recruiting blogs were given their due recently (in the from of noms from their fellow bloggers/readers/recruiters et al). Many of these are fun reading, all of them are useful to those in the industry. One request? I’d like to see more people talk about uniting the outside recruiters with the inner HR personnel.

Niche boards better than general. News Flash!
6 12 2007Here’s a story/press release that mentions that niche boards do a better job of drawing traffic than do general boards. As I see it, the inevitable cycle goes something like this:
1) Disgusted with large, difficult to maneuver site, small startup seeks to find ultra-specialized candidates for THEIR specialty and that only.
2) Smaller sites pop up everywhere (If SAP has their own site, why can’t Java have one too?, each targeting a specific niche. Candidates flock.
3) Larger sites/firms see the carnage and begin buying up smaller sites and mashing them together for efficiency. Recruiters are intrigued by paying only one fee and searching just one, large difficult to maneuver site. Complacency begins.
4) Repeat.
In my experience the best recruiters build relationships with their candidates and clients and view the constant searching on varying boards more like a “treasure hunt” than a chore. While these recruiters/sourcers may never be able to change the “job board cycle” they can remain unaffected by it. . .
